Today — Friday, February 20, 2026 — we pause and reflect on a group of everyday heroes whose work often goes unseen: caregivers. This day, known as National Caregivers Day, is observed annually on the third Friday in February in the United States to honor the compassion, resilience, and vital contributions of caregivers everywhere.
What Is National Caregivers Day?
National Caregivers Day is a special occasion dedicated to recognizing all kinds of caregivers — from professional healthcare workers like nurses and home health aides to family members, friends, and neighbors who provide support to someone in need.
A caregiver is someone who assists another person with daily living activities, medical needs, emotional support, and more. Caregivers may be trained professionals, but many are unpaid family members who balance caregiving with work, parenting, and other responsibilities.
This observance was established in 2015 by the Providers Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies (PAHHHA), and the first official celebration took place in 2016. Since then, the day has grown into a meaningful annual tribute to caregivers’ dedication.
Why Caregivers Matter
Caregivers are the backbone of our families, communities, and healthcare systems. They:
Support daily living — everything from bathing and dressing to meal preparation.
Manage medical needs — coordinating appointments, tracking medications, and collaborating with healthcare providers.
Provide emotional care — offering comfort, encouragement, and stability during difficult times.
Keep people at home — helping individuals stay in familiar surroundings instead of institutional settings.
Whether paid or unpaid, caregivers deserve recognition for the emotional, physical, and often financial sacrifices they make every day.
Ways to Celebrate and Show Appreciation
Here are thoughtful ways you can honor caregivers today and beyond:
1. Say “Thank You” — In Words and Deeds
A simple, heartfelt message — whether spoken, written, or posted — can make a world of difference.
2. Offer Acts of Service
Caregivers often put others first. Providing respite care, bringing a meal, or helping with errands can show appreciation in a practical way.
3. Support Self-Care
Gift a break, a spa certificate, or even just some quiet time. Caregivers rarely take time for themselves, and self-care matters.
4. Raise Awareness
Share stories and messages on social media using #NationalCaregiversDay — let others know how important caregivers are.
A Moment of Recognition
Caregivers often work behind the scenes, offering comfort, kindness, and critical support without fanfare. Today is a reminder that their work matters — not just to the people they care for, but to all of us whose lives are touched by their dedication.
Let’s celebrate caregivers — the quiet champions of compassion — and ensure they feel valued, supported, and appreciated today and every day.
Your heart is big, your hands are strong and your soul is kind. Thank you for caring for our older generation.
Share Your Story
We invite caregivers of all ages to share their personal stories, videos, photos, and reflections to offer hope, foster understanding, build community, and break down stigma surrounding caregiving. You can easily submit your video via social media using the hashtag #WellBeings or email your story to info@wellbeings.org. Your submission may be featured in the We Are Well Beings Storywall. The We Are Well Beings Storywall is made possible through the generous support of Otsuka and People.
